Se divide en dos hemisferios o mitades llamadas hemisferios cerebrales. Las áreas dentro del cerebro controlan las funciones musculares y también controlan el habla, el pensamiento, las emociones, la lectura, la redacción y el aprendizaje.
El cerebro contiene varios billones de células, de las que unos 100.000 millones de neuronas y posee casi 100 trillones de interconexiones en serie y en paralelo que proporcionan la base física que permite el funcionamiento cerebral. Gracias a los circuitos formados por las células nerviosas o neuronas, es capaz de procesar información sensorial procedente del mundo exterior y del propio cuerpo.
El cerebro desempeña funciones sensoriales, funciones motoras y funciones de integración menos definidas asociadas con diversas actividades mentales. Algunos procesos que están controlados por el cerebro son la memoria, el lenguaje, la escritura y la respuesta emocional.
El funcionamiento del cerebro se basa en el concepto de que la neurona es una unidad anatómica y funcional independiente, integrada por un cuerpo celular del que salen numerosas ramificaciones llamadas dendritas, capaces de recibir información procedente de otras células nerviosas, y de una prolongación principal, el axón, que conduce la información hacia las otras neuronas en forma de corriente eléctrica.
Pero las neuronas no se conectan entre sí por una red continua formada por sus prolongaciones, sino que lo hacen por contactos separados por unos estrechos espacios denominados sinapsis. La transmisión de las señales a través de las sinapsis se realiza mediante unas sustancias químicas conocidas como neurotransmisores, de los cuales hoy se conocen más de veinte clases diferentes.

Cada latido del corazón desencadena una secuencia de eventos llamados ciclos cardiacos, que consiste principalmente en tres etapas: sístole auricular, sístole ventrícular y diástole. El ciclo cardíaco hace que el corazón alterne entre una contracción y una relajación aproximadamente 75 veces por minuto; es decir el ciclo cardíaco dura unos 0,8 de segundo. Durante la ''sístole auricular", las aurículaaurículas se contraen y proyectan la sangre hacia los ventrículos. Una vez que la sangre ha sido expulsada de las aurículas, las válvulas auriculoventriculares entre las aurículas y los ventrículos se cierran. Esto evita el reflujo de sangre hacia las aurículas.

El estómago es la parte más dilatada del aparato digestivo y el órgano principal de la digestión. Viene a ser como un saco de forma muy irregular, que aumenta o disminuye de tamaño según la cantidad del alimento que contiene. Este órgano posee dos aberturas: una que comunica con el esófago, por donde entran los alimentos, que se llama cordias, y otra de salida que los conduce a los intestinos, una vez digeridos, que se llama píloro.
Las paredes del estómago están formadas por cuatro capas. La segunda de ellas es muy musculosa, sirviendo sus contracciones para amasar el bolo alimenticio cuando se halla en el estómago, completando la acción mecánica y facilitando así su mezcla con los jugos digestivos.
La membrana interior es una membrana mucosa que, examinada a través de una lupa, presenta unos hoyitos, en el fondo de los cuales aparece un punto oscuro.
Este punto es la abertura de las glándulas gástricas, que segregan un liquido digestivo, claro y ácido, llamado jugo gástrico. Los principales elementos constitutivos de éste son unos fermentos llamados ácido clorhídrico y las enzimas pepsina, gastrina y lipasa que ayudan a digerir los hidratos de carbono, las proteínas y las grasas del alimento. Específicamente, la pepsina, secretada por las glándulas gástricas, fracciona las proteínas en fragmentos más pequeños.
El píloro controla el extremo inferior del estómago y es un esfínter que admite en el duodeno el alimento digerido, después de que lo hayan procesado convenientemente los jugos digestivos.
En el estómago se produce la absorción de agua, alcohol y de algunas sales minerales.
En general, después de permanecer en el estómago el tiempo necesario, los alimentos forman una papilla, llamada quimo, que pasará poco a poco al intestino delgado.

Son glándulas de forma triangular ubicadas en la parte superior de los riñones.
Cada glándula suprarrenal está formada por una zona interna denominada médula y una zona externa que recibe el nombre de corteza.
*La médula suprarrenal produce adrenalina, llamada también epinefrina, y noradrenalina, que afecta a un gran número de funciones del organismo. Estas sustancias estimulan la actividad del corazón, aumentan la tensión arterial, y actúan sobre la contracción y dilatación de los vasos sanguíneos y la musculatura. La adrenalina eleva los niveles de glucosa en sangre (glucemia). Todas estas acciones ayudan al organismo a enfrentarse a situaciones de urgencia de forma más eficaz.
*La corteza suprarrenal elabora un grupo de hormonas denominadas glucocorticoides, que incluyen la corticosterona y el cortisol, y los mineralocorticoides, que incluyen la aldosterona y otras sustancias hormonales esenciales para el mantenimiento de la vida y la adaptación al estrés.
Las secreciones suprarrenales regulan el equilibrio de agua y sal del organismo, influyen sobre la tensión arterial, actúan sobre el sistema linfático, influyen sobre los mecanismos del sistema inmunológico y regulan el metabolismo de los glúcidos y de las proteínas. Además, las glándulas suprarrenales también producen pequeñas cantidades de hormonas masculinas y femeninas.

El hueso es un órgano firme, duro y resistente que forma parte del endoesqueleto de los vertebrados.
La constitución general del hueso es la del tejido óseo. Si bien no todos los huesos son iguales en tamaño y consistencia, en promedio, su composición química es de un 25% de agua, 45% de minerales como fosfato y carbonato de calcio y 30% de materia orgánica, principalmente colágeno y otras proteínas.
Los huesos en conjunto forman el esqueleto óseo que consta de 206 huesos; seis de los cuales se encuentran en los oídos, tres en cada uno.
Los huesos están distribuidos de la siguiente manera:

El hígado, es el órgano de mayor tamaño y complejidad metabólica del organismo está formado por miles de unidades estructurales llamados “lobulillos hepáticos”, que tienen forma hexagonal aproximadamente.
Sus principales funciones son: formación y excreción de bilis, regulación de la homeostasis de los carbohidratos, lipogénesis y secreción de lipoproteínas, control del metabolismo del colesterol, produciendo urea, albúmina, factores de coagulación, enzimas y muchas otras proteínas, y metabolismo o destoxificación de fármacos y de otras sustancias extrañas. No todos los hepatocitos desempeñan con igual intensidad estas funciones metabólicas existe cierta heterogenicidad que depende de su localización.

Los músculos son órganos rojos, blandos, contráctiles que están formados por células alargadas llamadas fibras musculares dispuestas en manojos. Cada fibras es una célula.
Son células que tienen más de un núcleo y miden más de 1 cm de largo. Las fibras están hechas de filamentos aún más pequeños, llamados miofibrillas que contienen sustancias químicas que pasa de una a otra y hacen que el músculo se contraiga.

El sistema respiratorio lo podemos dividir en una vía aérea superior formada por las fosas nasales, la faringe y laringe, y una vía aérea inferior que es a partir de donde se encuentra el cartílago crioides formada por la tráquea, bronquios, bronquiolos etc. hasta llegar a los bronquiolos terminales que finalizan formando los sacos alveolares y los alvéolos.
El alveolo tienen en su interior aire y muy próximo a él se encuentra el capilar pulmonar. Esta es la estructura funcional del pulmón.
Los pulmones van a recibir sangre a través de las arterias pulmonares que provienen desde el ventrículo izquierdo, las cuales se dan dividiendo a medida que se dividen los bronquios formando al final un entramado de capilares.
El pulmón se irriga por las arterias bronquiales que llevan sangre oxigenada y que provienen de la aorta.
El pulmón derecho se divide en tres lóbulos: superior, medio e inferior. Mientras que el pulmón izquierdo se divide en dos lóbulos: superior o inferior ya que el corazón se desplaza hacia la izquierda.
Los pulmones se encuentran dentro de una bolsa que se denomina pleura que tiene dos hojas una parietal y otra pleural.
Como hemos dicho la unidad funcional del pulmón es el alveolo el cual contiene aire en su interior, y el capilar que va a contener la sangre. Todo queda entramado en una "arquitectura" que se denomina intersticio pulmonar.
Fisiológicamente se tienen que dar:
* Un proceso que se denomina ventilación: por el cual entra aire desde el exterior hasta el alveolo y más tarde sale de nuevo al exterior.
* El proceso de difusión: se produce un intercambio de los gases entre el alveolo y el capilar pulmonar.
* El proceso de perfusión: el paso de sangre por el capilar. Está sangre va a ser la que se oxigena y más tarde vuelva al corazón.

El páncreas es una glándula de secreción mixta porque vierte su contenido a la sangre (secreción interna) y al tubo digestivo (secreción externa). Debido a esto podemos diferenciar entre la porción endocrina y la exocrina.
''Fisiología del páncreas exocrino'':
*El páncreas secreta jugo pancreático en gran cantidad: unos dos litros diarios. Su función es colaborar en la digestión de grasas, proteínas e hidratos de carbono y por su alcalinidad (pH entre 8.1 y 8.5) también neutraliza el quimo* ácido procedente del estómago. El jugo es un líquido incoloro, inodoro y es rico en bicarbonato sódico, cloro, calcio, potasio y enzimas* como la tripsina, la quimiotripsina, la lipasa pancreática y la amilasa pancreática. Estas enzimas contribuyen a la digestión de grasas, proteínas e hidratos de carbono.
''Fisiología del páncreas endocrino'':
*La parte endocrina del páncreas es la que sólo secreta hormonas directamente a la sangre como la insulina o el glucagón. Las hormonas son sustancias químicas producidas por las glándulas endocrinas que actúan como mensajeros químicos en concentraciones plasmáticas muy reducidas y lejos del punto de secreción. La acción de las hormonas sobre los distintos tejidos depende de su naturaleza química y de la capacidad de fijación de las células receptoras de los órganos. Las hormonas pueden ser de naturaleza lipídica, peptídica o mixta. La insulina y el glucagón son de naturaleza peptídica.

El aparato excretor es un conjunto de órganos encargados de la eliminación de los residuos nitrogenados del metabolismo, conocidos por la medicina como orina; que lo conforman la urea y la creatinina.
El aparato urinario humano se compone, fundamentalmente, de dos partes que son:
* Los órganos secretores: los riñones, que producen la orina y desempeñan otras funciones
* La vía excretora, que recoge la orina y la expulsa al exterior.
Está formado por un conjunto de conductos que son:
*Los uréteres, que conducen la orina desde los riñones a la vejiga urinaria.
*La vejiga urinaria, receptáculo donde se acumula la orina.
*La uretra, conducto por el que sale la orina hacia el exterior, siendo de corta longitud en la mujer
y más larga en el hombre denominada uretra peneana.
Lo normal es pensar que su función es la excreción, pero ella es solo una, y no la más importante, de las razones. Su función es regular el equilibrio del medio interno, para esto existe tanto, la excreción de metabolitos, como la retención de anabolitos que el organismo necesita (iones) , además tiene una función endocrina, ya que secreta sustancias que podrían considerarse como hormonas: renina, calicreina, eritropoyetina y prostraglandinas.
El riñón realiza sus funciones mediante varios mecanismos que son:
*Filtración glomerular
*Reabsorción tubular
*Secreción
*Excreción a través de la orina.
